How to Pick a Vacation Travel Destination

Travel destinations are not one-size-fits-all. Some see travel as a chance to relax at a sunny beach resort for a week. Others view a trip as an opportunity to visit a new city for museums, shopping and sightseeing. Some folks see travel as an occasion to join family and friends in a remote setting, such as an outdoor cabin destination. Those looking for romance may find a cruise or romantic weekend getaway fits their lifestyle.

Make a rough estimate for the vacation budget. Select a price range for food, travel and lodging expenses as a first step. This helps narrow your choices to affordable destinations. Include spending money to have fun during your stay. Look up seasonal travel deals offered by many online travel services. Traveling during peak times means large crowds and a less individualized experience. Consider planning your destination during off-peak months for deepest discounts on travel to popular sun and sand destinations like the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Barbados in the Caribbean.

Package deals offer discounts on airfare, hotel and transportation for an essential European holiday. Fine dine in Paris, France and shop for luxury in Milan, Italy with a package that allows you plenty of spending money to visit several destinations. Consider sightseeing the Fjords in Norway and stopping for a bier in Germany by purchasing a Eurail Pass. The European train system connects many major cities in Europe. Purchase a rail pass to ride anywhere, get off at any stop and journey on as many trains as you want without checking in or buying tickets for each trip. The popular Eurail Select Pass between the Mediterranean countries of Italy and Greece includes a ferry ride.

Turnaround and go south for a different approach to your international getaway. When the cold weather is too much to bear in the northern hemisphere, consider visiting locations in the milder climate of the southern hemisphere. Visit destinations in South America, Southern Africa or Australia for summer in December, January and February. Each destination has a distinct culture and authentic rugged qualities, but they all share the left to right sun trajectory that makes shadows cast in an anticlockwise pattern, like the flow of water. View brighter stars and clearer skies in Chile, Brazil and New Zealand as you head closer to the galactic center of the South Pole.

Where do you plan to travel? Set aside some time now to plan your next trip and you'll be glad you did!
